Located in the west of the Picardy region this heavily agricultural department produces mainly cereals and beetroot but also potatoes, hemp and flax amongst others. That is not to say it is not industrialised: there is a chemical works, large mirror production, iron works and distilleries. The countryside is made of undulating hills and valleys covered in cereal crops and thickly wooded areas and a number of vineyards are found around the Marne and aisne rivers.

The prefecture is Laon which is an old city of which the original ramparts perch at the top of a small mountain along with the cathedral looking down on the lower town. To the north east of the department it becomes hillier as the Ardennes Mountain range cuts into the countryside.
