Cher is a department in the centre of France, named after the River Cher and is part of the current region of Centre (Val de Loire) surrounded by the departments of Indre, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret, Nièvre, Allier, and Creuse with a surface area of about 7,235 km².
It is elevated in the south and in the east but in the centre there is a wide calcareous table-land. The most productive area is the east, which belongs to the valley of the Loire while the central districts are tolerably fertile but marshy, often being flooded by the Cher and in the south dry and fertile land predominate.
Agriculture dominates Cher with wheat and oats being the primary crop but also producing hemp, vegetables and various fruits and fortunately a high percentage of the area is still forest (1/5) making for great cycling and hiking territory. Mines of iron, stone’s quarry, bricks and glassworks also employ numerous people in the department.
The capital of Cher is Bourges where the cathedral of St. Etienne is a major attraction and at Vierzon there are metallurgical and engineering centres. Coal and wine are leading imports, while cereals, timber, wool, fruit and industrial products are exported.
