It is located in the centre of France in the region of Limousin, surrounded by the departments of Creuse, Haute-Vienne, Cantal, Puy-de-Dôme, Lot, and Dordogne. It was created during the French Revolution in 1790 and has an area of 5,857 km² housing around 233,000 inhabitants.

There is a strong farming culture here where the Correzian show their identity with agriculture centres, livestock fairs, livestock judging contests, and farming organisations, which are all part of the agricultural economy.

Correze is full of interesting sites such as castles like Les Tours de Merle (The Towers of Merle ); in fact the remains of 7 castles are registered as Historical Monuments. In Clergoux there is an example of Renaissance architecture with the chateau de Sedieres.

The capital of the department is Brive-la-Gaillarde, with 50,000 inhabitants, located at the crossroads between the Correze, the Perigord and Quercy.

Tulle is an industrial town with an old centre, grouped around the 16th century cathedral and produces accordions in its factories where visitors can be shown around. The accordion festival, Les Nuits de Nacre, takes place in the middle of September.
