Côte-d'Or

Cote d’Or is located in the eastern part of France in the Burgundy region and its capital is the world renowned Dijon where the famous mustard is cultivated. It was created in 1790, and is named after the Côte, the linear fault escarpment where you can find the famous Burgundy vineyards.

It is surrounded by the departments of Yonne, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire, Jura, Aube, and Haute-Marne. From the northeast to the southwest, there is a chain of hills, Plateau de Langres that cut through the department dividing its area of 8,763 km². There are 507,000 inhabitants.

The climate is temperate, with abundant rain on the west side of the central range creating a good environment in which to grow cereal grains and potatoes but the main attraction is its premier wine-growing region (located in the south of Dijon) which sustains the local economy.

Sheep and cattle are also raised in the department but also coal mines and heavy industry; including steel, machinery, and earthenware which are all important industries in the Cote d’Or department. Not only famous for its mustard Dijon is also known for its crème de cassis- blackcurrant for the kir.

Culturally, Dijon has a lot of museums such as : the Musée des Beaux Arts (where the tombs of the Dukes is found and a good collection of art), the Musée de la Vie Bourguignonne gives an interesting insight into the Burgundian lifestyle,…and the famous mustard also has its museum, in the basement of the Amora factory. Source: cotedor-tourisme.com
