Information on Côtes-d'Armor and Property Available for Sale through Leapfrog Properties

Côtes-d'Armor

The department is located in region of Brittany in the north of France. It is bordered by the departments of Finistère, Morbihan, and Ille-et-Vilaine, with the English Channel to the north. It was created in 1790, during the French revolution and the area is 6,878 km2 housing about 537,000 inhabitants.

Cotes d’Armor is called the Blue Brittany, referring to the sea which is considered incredibly beautiful by artists because of the special light it reflects. It is also called the Green Brittany because of the rich lush green countryside full of forests and walkways. Cotes d’Armor was renamed in the 90’s when before it was called the Cotes du Nord (Northerns Coasts) but some considered that the name could limit the tourism so it became Cotes d’Armor, referring to the sea in Breton language.

The Cotes d’Armor has an oceanic climate which is fresh in the summer and mild in winter although rainfall is rather frequent in the area.

Culturally, the Breton language has become an intense issue in many parts of Brittany, and many Breton-speakers advocate for bilingual schools. In contrast to Breton, which is a Celtic language, the Gallo language, is also spoken in the east and is offered as a language in local schools and on the baccalaureat exams.

The administrative capital is Saint-Brieu in the north of the department which is a largely industrialised city but with an attractive old part with well preserved cobbled streets through which to wander. Nearby is the university city of Guingamp where you can find a whisky distillery and plenty of nightlife and bars. Source: cotesdarmor.com.
