Doubs is a department in eastern France, located in the Franche-Comte region. It is surrounded by the French departments of Jura, Haute-Saone and Territoire de Belfort, and Swiss cantons Vaud, Neuchatel, and Jura. The Jura Mountains, located at the east of Besancon, tower above the department and are a great attraction for cross-country skiers and ramblers. Doubs was created in 1790 during the French revolution with an area around 5,234 km^2 housing a population of 494,200 inhabitants
The climate is continental: influenced by the north-European continent giving cold winters and hot summers.
Besancon is the capital of the department, famous for the town itself but also for the citadel in which are four museums: a zoo, an aquarium, the Musee de la Resitance and the Deportation. Most of the buildings are a blue-grey stone with red roofs and Roman remains such as the triumphal arch Porte Noire are found scattered across the city.
There are many buildings of interest such as the Palais Granville, with Renaissance façade which is now a museum of local history including exhibits from famous people as Victor Hugo. Also famous in Besancon is the Art Museum; Musee des Beaux Arts with impressive paintings, and the clock museum, Musee de l’Horlogerie (19 th century)
Another famous city is Montbeliard, the centre for Peugeot. The main base of Peugeot is Sochaux, north of Monbeliard, with a motor museum and guided tours of the factory.
