Eure is located in the region of Haute-Normandie, north of France and it’s surrounded by the departments of Seine-Maritime, Oise, Val-d'Oise, Yvelines, Eure-et-Loir, Orne, and Calvados. The department was created in 1790 during the French revolution and houses about 753,400 inhabitants within an area of 6,040km^2.
Eure is known to be largely wooded and the Seine flows from South-east to north east through the east of the department. The climate is mild, but moist and variable and agriculturally, wheat, oats, flax and beetroot are cultivated. There is a wide extent of pasturage in the department where there are numerous sheep and cattle but fruits are also cultivated, especially apples and pears which are used to make cider. Industrially there is the spinning of cotton and wool, brewing, distilling, turnery, cotton bleaching, cidermaking, manufacture of glass, paper, nails and wind instruments are also produced. Coal and raw materials for its industries are the chief imports of Eure; in contrary, it exports beef, poultry, eggs and manufactured goods. Culturally, Normandy is famous for being the birthplace of Impressionism, for instance, in Giverny you can find Monet’s garden.
Evreux is the capital of the department. Even though a large portion was destroyed during WWII, some monuments such as the cathedral thankfully escaped largely unscathed and now the city has been rebuilt, reflecting its functional and industrial needs and also attracts many visitors nowadays.
