The department Eure et Loir is located in the region Centre (Loire valley). The bordering departments are Eure, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret, Orne, Sarthe, Yvelines, Essonne and has an area of 5,880 km2 with a population of 410,900 inhabitants. The climate is wild and dry and not subject to sudden changes and the soil of the department is divided between clay intermixed with sand or of calcareous earth. Agriculture is efficient with a great average yield per acre. Cereals are very important; especially wheat and oats while also producing hemp, flax and some vegetables (asparagus for instance). Wine is not that common, but there is an abundant supply of apples from which to make cider which is the common drink for the inhabitants. There is also lots of pasture where sheep, cattle and horses are reared.
Industrially, Eure et Loir produces lime, grindstones and brick-clay. Even though there is no extensive production, there are many tanneries and leather-works, copper and ironfoundries, distilleries, potteries and agricultural implements such as cotton and woollen goods.
The capital of the department is Chartres, located in the north where the touristiest building is the cathedral, with its magnificent stained-glass windows. It took an astonishing 30 years to build at the beginning of the 13th century and is one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe.
Châteaudun is found in the south of Chartres: here you can find a massive château where its foundations plunge down into the small river Loir. It is a reasonably busy market town and is the only centre for local farmers to congregate. There are caves here- the “Grottes du Foulon” and a small art gallery.
