Gironde is located in the southwest of France, in the Aquitaine region and is named after the Gironde estuary that flows through it. Bordered by the departments of Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne, and Charente-Maritime and the Atlantic Ocean on the west it covers a surface area of 10,000 km2.
Gironde is divided naturally in two portions: on the west which is called Les Landes consists of morass and sandy plain thickly covered in long stretches of pine forest whereas on the east the dunes are fringed for some distance by two extensives lakes, Carcans and Lacanau, linked to each other by the Bay of Arcachon, where the Atlantic waves allow for excellent surfing. The Atlantic coastline is one of the main attractions of the department and the area is popular with holidaymakers, but fortunately not so much as to adversely affect it and is still very French.
The department is of course well known for its wines which are by far the most important branch of industry in Gironde and you can visit several attractive vine growing villages including the famous villages such as St Emilion or Medoc surrouded by the vineyards that have given them their notoriety.
The climate in this department is fantastic- the summers are very hot and long whereas the winters are mild. Agriculturally, wheat, rye, maize, corn, oats and tobacco are grown and there are various manufacturing plants where the bulk of trade is carried on at Bordeaux (the capital of Gironde) - one of the most important ports in France.
Bordeaux is famous for its stunning architecture but also for its nightlife with plenty of restaurants and bars.
Property prices in this department are still very reasonable especially in the North in Haut Gironde especially if you move in land and away from the Bordeaux city centre.
