The department of Hauts de Seine is located in the Ile de France region and is small and densely populated containing the modern office, theatre, and shopping complex known as La Défense with its modern Grande Arche. Hauts-de-Seine and two other small departments, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne, form a ring around Paris, known as the petite couronne.
In Saint Cloud, west of Paris, was the residence of Napoleon in 1799 after his Coup d’Etat but, in 1870 a fire destroyed the chateau and the grounds are now classified as a national monument where the formal gardens were designed by Le Notre. Close to the park of Saint Cloud, Sèvres was world famous for its fine porcelain, supplying aristocratic houses across Europe. There is the National Ceramic Museum here which relates the history of the industry which has a beautiful collection.
Grande Arche de La Défense is a huge cube in glass and marble designed by Danish architect Van Spreckelsen. It is a modern version of the Arc du Triomphe and was opened in 1989 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Revolution.
Reuil Malmaison is on the banks of the Seine which Napoléon’s wife Joséphine bought it in 1799. She made it her home after the Imperial divorce in 1809 where Napoléon spent a nostalgic few days before being packed off to St Helena in exile. Napoléon III turned it into a museum and gives an intriguing view of the Napoléonic era. The smaller château, Petite Malmaison, was built specifically for Joséphine to indulge in her great passion for horticulture.
