Information on Loire-Atlantique and Property Available for Sale through Leapfrog Properties

Loire-Atlantique

Loire-Atlantique is part of the current region of Pays-de-la-Loire and is surrounded by the departments of Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Maine-et-Loire, and Vendée, with the Atlantic on the west. It was originally part of Brittany, and contains what many people consider to be Brittany's capital- Nantes.

Because of being historically part of the ancient Duchy of Brittany, it still owes much allegiance in terms of culture. Because of its proximity to the ocean it is one of the most temperate areas in the country where summers are warm, but never too hot and winters are mild although sometimes quite wet. It is hence a location suitable for vine cultivation and therefore wine production- the famous Muscadet wine is produced here.

Several châteaux also take residence in the Loire Atlantique most of which are older fortresses such as Blain and Clisson dating from as early as the 12th century.
Nantes is the capital of the department and is the seventh largest city in France and the fourth largest port well situated for trade from across the Atlantic. Nantes also still boasts magnificent 18th century buildings and a medieval quarter, centred on the 15th century château, where the original Bluebeard (Gilles de Retz) was said to have murdered hundreds of children before being convicted of sorcery in 1440. Nantes also houses several important museums and art galleries including the Musée Jules Verne, commemorating the writer who was born there. In the north of the department is the seaside town of La Baule, which is famed for its vast beaches and on the coastline between Ile De Noirmoutier and Les Sables D'Olonne are small towns and villages, from where you can admire the Coast of Light and its lie dramatic view. The average price of a 4 bedroom property for sale in Loire Atlantique will cost between 280k and 320k Euros which is roughly the regional average while a 2 bedroom apartment will cost between 195k Euros and 215k Euros which is more than the average as coastal apartments are more expensive than others. Like many destinations on the west coast of France this region is popular with the British and we see no sign of that changing.
