Information on Meurthe-et-Moselle and Property Available for Sale through Leapfrog Properties

Meurthe-et-Moselle

Meurthe-et-Moselle is a department in the northeast of France and part of the region of Lorraine surrounded by the departments of Meuse, Vosges, Bas-Rhin and Moselle and by Luxembourg and Belgium.

The department was created in 1871 at the end of Franco-Prussian War from territories of the departments of Moselle and Meurthe which remained France’s territory. The current boundary between Meurthe-et-Moselle and Moselle was the border between France and Germany from 1871 to 1919. The climate is shaped largely by the Vosgian region and has hot summers and severe winters. The department possesses much fertile land- the chief crops being cereals and potatoes together with clover, tobacco, hops and beetroot. The vine is also cultivated.

The principal towns of the department are Nancy (the capital), Luneville, Toul, Longwy, Pont-a-Mousson and St Nicolas. Nancy is a city rich in culture and history with pleasant architecture reflecting its two golden ages: the 18th and 20th century. The city was spared occupation during Lorraine’s first experience of being annexed (1870-1918) and a certain devil-may-care atmosphere remains. Nancy contains some beautiful fountains- the Place Stanislas, but also the Musee des Beaux Arts and the city also has its own Arc de Triomphe. Luneville has an amazing motorcycle museum and also contains the Château “Le Petit Versailles”, from the 18th century. This chateau is located near the Eglise St Jacques, which is a rare example of the rococo style in France. Source: travelagentcentral.com
