Oise is a department in the north of France forming part of the current region of Picardie and is situated 35 km north of Paris. It is surrounded by the departments of Somme, Aisne, Seine-et-Marne, Val-d'Oise, Eure, and Seine-Maritime.
The climate is very variable but the range of temperature is moderate. Clay, sand and building-stone are among the mineral products of Oise where Pierrefonds, Gouvieux, Chantilly and Fontaine Bonneleau have mineral springs. Wheat, oats and other cereals, potatoes and sugar beet are the chief agricultural crops while cattle rearing is mainly focused in the western districts where dairy herds are prominent.
The major tourist attraction of the department is the Parc Astérix, which opened in 1989 and another interesting site is the cathedral of Beauvais.
Compiegne is one of the famous cities within the department and has a very rich history comparable to that of Versailes or Fontainebleau. Famous people such as Loius XIV or Napoleon III have been filled with enthusiasm for this place.
Chantilly, another well known town is small but has a grand heritage of historical and cultural sites. It is famous for its chateau building (the first one is from Gallo-Roman times); the Grand Château and Petit Château now house the amazing Condé Museum, an eclectic collection of paintings, furniture, gems, ceramics, tapestries and porcelain. Another impressive building is the Museum of the Horse, with shows and dressage demonstrations throughout the year.
Beauvais is the capital of the department and houses a beautiful gothic cathedral- the largest cathedral of its day which has suffered more catastrophes than most of the French churches. Near the cathedral sits the Tapestry Museum where the manufacture of tapestries has existed since the 17th century exporting its works throughout Europe.
