Orne is a department in the northwest of France in the current region of Lower Normandy and is surrounded by the departments of Eure, Eure-et-Loir, Sarthe, Mayenne, and Calvados; it is the only department in Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy to be landlocked. Orne has a spectacular landscape full of hills, forests, rivers and valleys.
Alencon and Vimoutiers were engaged in the production of linen and canvas where Vimoutiers has bleacheries which together with dye-works are found in the textile centres. Foundries and wireworks also exist in the department, as do the manufacture of articles in copper, zinc and lead. It is in Orne that the famous Camembert cheese is produced and Vimoutiers is a small town where the birthplace of the cheese is celebrated in a big way.
Alencon is the capital of Orne where 400 years ago it was the lace capital of Europe. Today the lace school survives but the industry itself has long since departed and Alençon is now the centre of manufacture for Moulinex. When visiting the city it is interesting to view the gothic Eglise Notre Dame.
