The Sarthe is located in the region of Pays de la Loire and is bordered by the departments of Eure-et-Loir, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne and Orne. It is named after the river Sarthe which joins the Mayenne to constitute the Maine; the Sarthe flows through some very picturesque villages in the south of Le Mans whereas in the north of the department is The Parc Naturel Regional de Normandie et Maine with its forests and the range of hills- the Alpes Mancelles.

With regard to agriculture in this department, corn, barley and hemp are cultivated and south of the Loire is wine is making.

The capital is Le Mans located between Paris and Nantes and is famous for the 24-hour endurance race but it is a well preserved Gallo-Roman town with pretty, winding medieval streets, the St Julien cathedral and the well restored Abbaye de Notre Dame de l’Epau- altogether a great heritage. Around the city there is some of the most beautiful countryside in Central France, with forests, rivers and lakes which are great for long walks and watersports.

Near the capital, pretty villages worth going are: La Ferte Bernard, built on marshes; St Leonard-des-Bois which is a resort from where you can begin the exploration of the Alpes mancelles and the Regional Park and Asnieres-sur-Vegre with its working watermill and its 11th century church with gothic murals.
