The Somme department is located in the Picardie region and the bordering departments are: Aisne, Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais and Seine-Maritime. Even though now the region is peaceful, it was the site of many great battles in World War I in 1916, and Somme has a number of monuments to soldiers from various countries. The landscape in Somme is varied with chalk cliffs and woods and its towns and villages along the valley are very pleasant.
Amiens is the capital of the Picardy region and is a centre for tourism but also an industrial town in Picardy. The city was almost destroyed during both wars and only few monuments survived like the cathedral which is still very beautiful and a medieval area- Quartier St Leu with a number of bars and restaurants. This quartier is famous for its puppet, king of St Leu, Lafleur which is the best known character of the famous string puppets who you can see in the old puppet theatres that still exist. The hortillonages (floating market gardens) on the network of small canals off the Somme have been a particular feature of the city since medieval times and punts can be hired to explore the waterways.
Abbeville and Péronne are the sous-prefectures of the department. Both of them suffered in the wars: Abbeville has been totally destroyed but was rebuilt using the original medieval street plan when it was a prosperous commercial centre under English rule. Also the abbey of St Vulfran, 15th century has been beautifully restored. The town acts as a good centre for exploring the area.
St Valéry sur Somme is a charming little port with fortified walls and old entry gates with lovely views of the vast stretches of sand across the Bay. Flocks of sheep can often be seen grazing on the dunes or crossing the sand when the tide is out - the pré salé (ready salted!) lamb is one of the specialities of the area. The marina is popular with Channel yachtsmen while the beaches attract families with children.
