Yvelines is located in the region of Ile de France and is bordered by the departments Eure, Eure-et-Loir, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine and Val-d'Oise.
The eastern part and the northern part of the department are part of the Paris metropolitan area, but the rest of the department is rural, much of it covered by the Rambouillet Forest.
Yvelines is culturally very rich and has some real gems boasting nine chateaux including the famous Châteaux de Versailles (open to the public), two royal villas, two natural parks, 22 golf courses and over 70,000 hectares of forest.

A few kilometres to the south west of Versailles is Elancourt and France Miniature. Open from April to November, the whole of France is laid out in miniature with 160 national monuments and 15 villages typical of their regions using lakes for the seas.

St Germain en Laye is one of the oldest of the royal palaces which has hardly changed since the 16th century when the industrious Le Nôtre refashioned the grounds and replanted the forest. The Musée des Antiquités Nationales in the château is a superb collection of artefacts depicting the history of France.

Between St Germain en Laye and Versailles, Marly le Roi is a fashionable, quiet suburb by the Seine once popular with artists such as Sisley, Monet and Renoir. The Impressionists’ Trail is a walking route with plaques where the artists used to paint.
