Information on Meuse and Property Available for Rent through Leapfrog Properties

Meuse

Meuse is a department in northeast France in the region of Lorraine and is surrounded by the French departments of Ardennes, Marne, Haute-Marne, Vosges, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and Belgium to the north. Meuse was one of the great battlefields of World War I- the most important battle here being fought in 1916 at Verdun.
Agriculture is concentrated in the Meuse River valley where most of the department's people live cultivating wheat, oats, rye, barley, clover and potatoes and to some extent the vine. Part of the Argonne forest is in the north, and in the forested west and central regions there is extensive animal breeding: these forests are principally of oak and are rich in game as the rivers are plentiful in fish.
Bar-le-Duc, the capital, and Verdun are the chief towns- its industries include the manufacture of metals, foundry products, wood products, ceramics, and glass.

Verdun is located at the mouth of the river Meuse and was the site of a very hard fought battle in WWII during which quite incredibly Verdun was never taken by the Germans- it is where General Petain made his reputation by organising the defence of Verdun and then, in WWII he presided over the collaborationist Government in Vichy. Now, it is common to see some memorials around Verdun’s villages and hamlets.
The citadel (fortress) is the Musee de la Citadelle Militaire, where it recreates an audio-visual display of the role of Verdun in the Wars and also shows how the "unknown soldier" was chosen for re-internment under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 1920.

Bar-le-Duc is a charming town, with a centre showing a treasure of Renaissance architecture in which the college Giles de Treve in 1560 was considerated by Montaigne as the most beautiful house in France. The city has textile mills, iron foundries, printing plants, and metallurgical and food-processing industries.
