Information on Morbihan and Property Available for Rent through Leapfrog Properties

Morbihan

Morbihan is a département in the northwest of France and forms part of the current région of Brittany and it is surrounded by the departments of Finistère, Côte-d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine, and Loire-Atlantique, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest.
The climate of Morbihan is characterized by great moisture and mildness: it is generally warmer and drier than in other areas of Brittany and is hence more popular than other areas for tourists and those looking for a second property. Rye, buckwheat, wheat and potatoes are the chief crops while hemp and flax are also grown.

Vannes is the capital of the department. It is an attractive town steeped in history and was important in the 16th century when the Duchy of Brittany became united with France. Since then the old town, behind its ramparts, has remained more or less untouched. The city has plenty of things to see such as the cathedral, the Musee des Beaux Arts, the butterfly house (La Papillonneraie), the Musee des Automates (mechanical toys from the 19th century) and the old streets full of shops and cafes.

Also of potential interest in Morbihan is the exploration of Island-strewn Morbihan Gulf (a huge natural harbour) which is a short excursion to the Ile des Moines and proves to be very popular.

Lorient is another important city in the department; it prospered in the 17th century with the moving here of Compagnie des Indes and has developed into an important naval base, commercial and also a fishing port. Unfortunately during WWII the city was destroyed for its most part and the architecture now is not so interesting, however, Lorient is reputed to have some excellent restaurants and a lively nightlife. Lorient is also known for its fishing port which is the second largest in France and is famous for its Yacht races and the Festival Interceltique where Celtic people from Britain and Spain meet celebrating traditional music and dancing in the streets.
