Information on Pas-de-Calais and Property Available for Rent through Leapfrog Properties

Pas-de-Calais

Pas-de-Calais is a department in northern France forming part of the current region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais surrounded by the departments of Nord and Somme and the English Channel and the North Sea. Some coasts within the department have been battle sites during WWI; Vimy Ridge is Canada's most important memorial to its fallen soldiers. During the WWII, the department was subject to Operation Fortitude, which was an Allied plan to deceive that the invasion of Europe was to occur here, rather than in Normandy.
Economically the Pas de Calais was long dependent on mining- primarily coal mining, however, since World War II, the economy has become more diversified.
Pas de Calais is one of the most densely populated departments in France even though it has no large cities to speak of. The biggest is Calais in the north where its border with the department Nord contains most of the population, whereas the centre and the south are more rural, but still quite populated in the villages or small towns.
The climate is similar to that of Southeast England: Summers are warm with some precipitation and winters are cold and often wet.
For British the big attraction of the department is its convenient location: it takes less than two hours to cross from Dover to Calais by Ferry with the whole of the Nord Pas de Calais region being less than a 90-minute drive away from the Calais ferry port.
After Calais, Boulogne-sur-mer is also an important city- a fishing port with lot of charm which has a chateau with the colossal dome of the cathedral. In warm weather there are catamarans and windsurf boards for hire as well as sand yachts and even chars à voile (windsurfing on wheels).

Also famous and having the nickname of Paris-Plage, le Touquet has been a favourite destination for the Parisians since the 20th century with activities such as tennis, riding and golf available. The Aqualud complex on the beach is also popular and the Enduro 24 hour motorcycle scramble across the dunes in February is a big attraction for the fans of powered two-wheelers.

Property for Rent in Pas-de-Calais

The average price of a 4 bedroom property for sale in Pas de Calais will cost between 225k and 265k Euros while a 2 bedroom apartment will cost between 155k Euros and 175k Euros which means that 2 bedroom apartments here cost slightly more than the average while 4 bedroom houses cost less than the average French property. It is a reasonably popular location for British buyers due to its proximity to the UK and some Parisians who spend weekends away from the city. This coupled with relatively cheap prices make it worth considering.
