Saône-et-Loire
Saone-et-Loire is located in the Burgundy region and is bordered by the departments Ain, Allier, Côte-d'Or, Jura, Loire, Nièvre and Rhône.
It has a warm climate perfect for making of the famous Beaujolais wine found in its beautiful green valleys.
The capital of the department is Macon which is an attractive but busy town with architecture a mixture between Romanesque and early gothic. The town contains the Musee Lamartine of the French poet and a history museum and one of the important monuments in the town is the St Vincent Cathedral which took a battering during the French revolution and hence has only two towers remaining.
Others villages in the Beaujolais in the south of Macon worth a visit are: Fleurie, Julienas, Chenas and Romaneche-Thorins where there is a history of wine making during the visit of the Hameau du Vin.
Chalons sur Saone is also an important town. It is industrial but still has its historic centre with authentic medieval houses. Culturally, it also contains the Nicephore Niepce Museum because it is the birthplace of photography where there are the first colour photos, Daguerrotypes, but also holograms and audio visual exhibits.
