Aquitaine

Located in the south west of France this is France’s largest region but remains largely under populated which is the attraction to many foreigners, especially the British. Along its border to the Pyrenees lies the once very fashionable town of Biarritz which is actually having a revival of late and has long been a region heavily influenced by Basque settlers bringing with them their strong traditions and language. Along the coast the beautiful, quiet, and long white beaches are a haven for an escape from reality and not nearly as busy as the Cote d’Azur. Meanwhile, at the base of the Pyrenees in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques departement you will find lush green foothills where houses gradually become Chalets leading to the hiking and skiing territory that its great mountain range offers.

You will find large pine forests through which to stroll in the Landes department and above this in the Gironde department exists possibly the most famous wine growing region in France- Bordeaux. Here are the well-known vineyard areas such as St-Emilion set amongst rolling hills, and Medoc, a much flatter area west of the River Gironde. Now, the area the British refer to as Dordogne named after its beautiful river is what the French call the Perigord which is divided into colour areas after its local scenery. Perigord Noir after its oak woods, Perigord Vert after its green pastureland and woods, Perigord Blanc after the white colour of its rock and Perigord Pourpre- purple after its wine growing area around Bergerac.

In the north-east of Aquitaine sits the region’s capital city of Bordeaux, which is a busy, cosmopolitan city with a mix of industry and nearby vineyards. On the weekends many Bordelais escape to the coast to an area known as the “Cote d’Argent” which is the longest and sandiest coast in Europe extending from the south of Les landes right through to Lacanau in Gironde, behind which stretches the largest forest in Europe- La foret des Landes. Just below Bordeaux is the sandy haven of Arcachon where exclusive Second Empire mansions overlook a part of the seaside, and a sprawl of villas occupy the rest of the town. Much further down the coast in the Basque region are a number of good resorts: Bayonne, slightly inland is the cultural focus next to the seaside resort of Biarritz and the more family orientated and attractive resorts of St-Jean-de-Luz and Anglet are nearby. Lastly, not far inland is Pau - a pretty city offering fantastic views of the Pyrenees which the English discovered in the 19th century bringing with them golf and fox hunting.
