Ariège
Ariege is located in the Midi Pyrenees region in the south of France, just south of Toulouse. It is north of Andorra and west of Haute Garonne and contains about 137,000 inhabitants.
Ariege has a varied geography from flat arable land in the north to the high, rugged mountains of the Pyrenees in the south. The regional capital of Ariege is Foix - an attractive compact town offering all the usual conveniences.
Because of its tucked away position, the area is not so touristy and hence is a haven of tranquillity for those looking for something more remote. The climate is generally quite mild throughout the year and is most popular at the two extremes of the season: in summer during July and August but also in winter for the ski season from December to April. Ariege can be a good place to walk, indulge in some interesting history thanks to its fascinating 13th Century footpaths used during the Second World War to escape to Spain. This department is also a popular destination for the cyclists (Tour de France, 3 days in July), and mountain biking attracts a lot people during a 2 day event in November.
