Corse
This is a region which although catering for tourists which outnumber its population 7 or 8 times over has managed to not let them take-over and spoil the region: high-rise developments are confined to the main towns. Situated 99 miles off the south-east coast of France, Corsica benefits from a very mild climate and its white sandy beaches coupled with its jagged, snow capped mountains provides excellent surroundings for tourists and residents alike. It is a region which is very proud of its native language, culture and traditions which makes for a sometimes turbulent relationship with mainland France. Olive trees, clementines, kiwis and other agricultural produce adorn the countryside and also makes up for a substantial part of the island’s income.
Bastia, the most purely Corsican of the region’s towns lies in the north and was the seat of the Genoese government in the 15th century. In the old port winding your way through a network of haphazard streets stand pretty, tall houses mixed amongst coloured boat hulls and waterside bars and restaurants. Ajaccio, a battered old town offers a quieter residence with marvellous views of the bay and cafes and restaurants in which to unwind. Porto-Vecchio has really developed due to tourism and is incredibly well situated close to the mountains, spicy scented maquis and the pink village of Piana. Spectacular Gorges giving access to the natural springs that crop up in the Foret d’Aitone are also nearby.
