Franche-Comté
This region in the east of France borders Switzerland and shares many Germanic and Swiss characteristics. The countryside consists of vast areas of woodland, lakes and pastureland and to the south the Jura Mountains are very popular with cross-country skiers. From the summits of Haute-Jura views stretch over Lake Geneva and towards the Alps and the lakes filled by waterfalls are perfect for swimming in. As the River Doube flows, it passes through the pretty villages of Baume-les-Messieurs and Chateau Chalon where quaint timbered houses perched on stilts rest on the side of the River.
The ancient and attractive town of Besancon is situated at the heart of the region and due to its unfamiliarity with tourists it is very peaceful- even during the summer months. Another very tranquil place is the spa town of Lons-le-Saunier, below Besancon, which hosts lively music concerts during the summer. However, if you are looking for a more Germanic feel similar to that found in Alsace then Montbeliard would be just down your street possessing majestic 16th Century architecture to feast your eyes on. A little further North just across from the German and Swiss borders is Belfort which has been of great military importance over the years and has monuments and structures built as a Testimony to this.
