Lorraine
This region in the north-east of France shares its border with three other countries, namely Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. The land here is used for mixed agriculture and heavy industry and its gently rolling landscape looks windswept and quite uninteresting. However it has been an important battle ground throughout history and there are a number of war museums and monuments to the east near the border especially Thionville. The bloodiest battle of the First World War was fought in this region at Verdun and was known as the most heavily fortified region in France.
Metz, the capital of Lorraine is a lively city with stately public squares and relaxing riverside parks but does not offer that much to the would be second-home buyer. Nancy to the south is a much more attractive city which, at the turn of the century became an important centre of art Nouveau and maintains much 18th century architecture. The pretty market town of Pont-a-Mousson offers some interesting architecture and good hiking territory and Rodemack is equally interesting.

Property for Sale in Lorraine
The average price of a 2 bedroom apartment property for sale in the Lorraine region is between 110k Euros and 150k Euros while the price of a 4 bedroom house is between 190k Euros and 230k Euros. As a region, property in the area is very good value especially if you are looking for a renovation project in the countryside but in Metz this is not the case due to its popularity with bargain-seeking Luxemburgers from across the border. However, this popularity also makes for a healthy rental market and hence a good investment.
