Located in north-west France, just below Brittany and Basse-Normandy, this region offers both sandy resorts as well as scenic, rural areas. The area is popular with foreign house-hunters as it combines good wine production and a mild climate and not too many tourists…..yet.

If you are looking for a house in a wooded, agricultural area with a few Chateaux and Abbeys thrown in then the department of Sarthe is a worthy candidate in the north-east of the region; it also hosts the 24hr car race at Le Mans. Below this resides the most visited area of the region around the city of Angers with its sturdy fortress on the bank of the river Maine. Across this river in La Doutre you can find some medieval mansions and houses and nearby displays of 15th to 17th century tapestrys.

Onward towards the Atlantic coast are the contrasting rocky and sandy beaches around Nantes, notably the crescent shaped beach and attractions of La Baule. Nantes, formerly a part of Brittany until fairly recently, is an important sea port and is now quite an industrial town but still contains a number of important historical buildings. Further down the coast more resorts spring up on the coast known as “cote de Jade”, aptly named after its Jade green looking sea.

Another popular area for foreigners with two offshore islands (Noirmoutier and You) is Vendee. Its extensive sandy coastline is furnished with woodland and inland impressive chateaux and abbeys await you and like the rest of the region; orchards, vineyards and lush green valleys make up the rest of this agricultural area.

Property prices are still relatively cheap especially if you drop back from the coast slightly, although even on the coast it can’t be classed as expensive. Bauge, Angers, Saumur and the area around the Vendee coastline are popular destinations and the area is filled with gites. Prices here have increased quite substantially and with its growing tourist sector from French and foreigners alike are likely to continue and it remains a good investment area.
