Bergerac is the capital of the Dordogne department which is part of the Aquitaine department. In the old town you will find a handful of medieval houses but it is now mostly a modern town as it was devastated by the Wars of Religion when most of its population fled overseas. Bergerac has a number of museums and is a good base for visiting the Roman remains nearby at “Chateau de Montaigne” and “Montcaret”. This area is also known as Bastide country where fortresses were built in the 13th & 14th centuries when the area was hotly contested by the English and the French. There are excellent examples of these at nearby Monflanquin and Monpazier and other places worth visiting nearby include Villereal, Biron and Beaumont. The airport is located 5km south of Bergerac while the train station is a 10 minute walk from the old town.
