Found in the department of Charente-Maritime on the west coast of France, La Rochelle remains unspoilt despite it having been a popular seaside town for many years. La Rochelle combines both character and beautiful architecture within its 17th century town centre with a marina development and miles of sandy beaches making it an attractive place to live in all year round and not just a holiday resort. Just two miles away from the mainland is the island “Ile de Re”- a quieter location with oyster farms, wildlife sanctuaries, and long sandy beaches, although it does get very busy during the summer. It is protected from heavy development with no high rise apartments - just small white washed houses and cottages with pretty pastel yellow or blue shutters.
