Limoges, located in the Haute-Vienne department of the Limousin region is famous for its china manufacturing industry however this has largely dried up due to changing tastes and recession and now the workshops mainly survive on the tourist trade. Limoges has a cathedral called the “Cathedral de St Etienne” which is one of the most interesting buildings in the city but there are also museums, a botanical garden and churches. Around Limoges there are a number of places worth visiting like the Chateaux of Rochechouart, Chalus and Nexon and the Roman baths at Chassenon or the Abbey of Solignac. There is an airport and train station in the city but the real reason for coming to the Limousin is to explore the countryside which can only be done by car so you will really need to hire one or take the ferry and drive over.
