Finistère
This department is located in the region of Brittany in the North West of France, bordering the departments of Côtes-d'Armor and Morbihan and is the most westerly part of metropolitan France (the name Finistère actually means end of the earth). The area is about 6,733 km2 with a population of 840,900 inhabitants.
The capital of the department is Quimper and the largest town in Finistère is Brest. Brest was a naval base and it took a terrible pounding during the last war but fortunately has been rebuilt although it is not as attractive as it once was. However, some parts of old Brest still retain its old charm with small cobbled squares where local artists and poets gather and relax. Culturally, Finistère is the area where Breton survives most strongly as a spoken language: the Festival de Cornouaille, which takes place in Quimper, is a celebration of Breton music and traditions. Travelling over the channel is made simple with the port of Roscoff linking Brittany by ferry with Ireland and Great Britain.
Famous for its beaches ( Porzliogan, Blancs sablons), le Conquet is also a small fishing port which still retains its original charm and at night you can watch a spectacular display of white flashing lights with the numerous lighthouses on the island of Ouessant.
Another famous fishing port which is one of the largest in France is Concarneau. It is a very popular resort with the view of the old walled town- one of the most photographed in Brittany and has housed famous people such as Vauban or Gauguin.
