Gers
The department is located in the south of France in the Midi-Pyrenees region and is surrounded by the departments Haute-Garonne, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées and Tarn-et-Garonne. It represents an area of 6, 300 km^2 with around 172,500 inhabitants.
The climate is very pleasant, with hot summers and mild winters.
Gers is famous for its agriculture (which is the main industry) and local specialities such as the Foie Gras and the wild mushrooms whilst also famous for its Armagnac brandy; it is also possible to visit the museum of this fiery beverage. The south-western district is the most productive where the valleys are generally fertile and the grain produced is more than sufficient for local consumption. Wheat, maize and oats are the principal cereals.
Auch is also an important city, the most populated in Gers although only 20,000 people live there, and it’s really touristy on market days. It houses the Cathedrale de Ste Marie built in the 15th century. Here you can also find the statue of Charles de Batz de Catelmore on which d’Artagnan is based- the famous character of Alexander Dumas’s “the Three Musketeers”. The city is full of shops and restaurants where you can sample an abundance of local specialities.
Thankfully tourism in Gascony does not overrun its natural and peaceful surroundings and in fact there are only few conurbations, with a large part of the population living in small villages.
