Haute-Garonne
The department is located in the region Midi-Pyrenees and is surrounded by the departments Ariège, Aude, Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne. Haut Garonne was created in 1790, during the French revolution and has an area of 6,309 km^2 and with a population of about 990,700 inhabitants.
For nearly 200 kilometres (125 miles), the Garonne River traverses the agricultural department and in the extreme south lies in the Pyrenees mountain range offering as it does fabulous views and great hiking and skiing territory. The greatest population concentration is around Toulouse while the south of the department is relatively sparsely populated.
Except in the mountainous region the climate is mild with the mean annual temperature being rather higher than that of Paris and the Midi-Pyrenees region is also considered to have some of the cleanest air in Europe.
Agriculturally, the soil is occupied by vineyards, chestnuts, apples, peaches and you can also find some cattle herds in the mountains.
Toulouse is the capital of Haute Garonne and is its largest city situated on the Garonne River, which converges with the Canal du Midi. Toulouse also houses the region’s main international airport located in its west and is a centre for tourism, commerce and industry in the Midi Pyrenees. The centre of the city is charming and ancient with very interesting architecture from different periods of its long history showing the city’s great depth and character which entices keen tourists year upon year.
