Vaucluse

Vaucluse is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region bordering the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Ardèche, Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme and Gard. The Vaucluse department was created on December 8, 1793 out of parts of the Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme and Basses-Alpes (later renamed Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) department.
Mountains cover a significant surface of the territory in the East, with the Mont Ventoux being its highest point which dominates the natural landscape over the most fertile plain for fruits and vegetables in Southern France.
The prefecture is Avignon, located in the lower Rhone Valley which occupies the extreme south-west corner of the department. This city is well located with a wonderful climate and also has lovely parks and gardens as excellent waterfront walks. It is a city full of history with its medieval ramparts a big attraction. They were re-built in the 14th century after the original 11th century ramparts were destroyed during the siege of 1226. The city’s charm is found amongst the ancient narrow streets and cobbled courtyards and renovated Avignon has pastel-coloured facades which tower up over beautifully paved streets. Culturally, Avignon is the capital of the French theatre, now famous with its Festival d’Avigon.
Avignon is also the great city of the Popes with the Palais des Papes which is more like a citadel than a papal palace. Nine Popes ruled from here - seven officially – beginning in 1309 when Pope Clement V moved the papal court here from Rome.
Located in the south of the department, the Luberon region includes the Parc Naturel Régional du Lubéron where its colourful landscape is ideal for VTT -mountain biking. There are also several medieval villages in the Luberon area, as well as the River Durance that skirts its southern limits.
The town of Apt is the largest in the Luberon area and is a functional market town whose main attraction lies is in the old town centre whose narrow streets wind their way past medieval Luberon property.
