Vendée

Vendee is a department in west central France, on the Atlantic's Bay of Biscay, in the region Pays de la Loire with bordering departments of Charente-Maritime, Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire and Deux-Sèvres.
The area today called the Vendee was originally known as the Bas-Poitou. In the south-east corner, the village of Nieul-sur-l'Autise is believed to be the birthplace of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204) and was part of her Kingdom. Eleanor's son, Richard I of England (the Lionheart) often based himself in Talmont and the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) turned much of the Vendee into a battleground. It is also remembered as the place where the peasants revolted against the Revolutionary government in 1793.
Economically, Vendee is centred on tourism, with the seaside resorts of Les Sables, La Tranche and La Faute being popular with both foreign and domestic tourists and property buyers. Vendee today is a popular tourist destination because it boasts many churches, abbeys and museums as well as the beaches which follow its spectacular coastline of 250kms from the midpoint of Bourgneuf Bay down to the lowlands north of La Rochelle. Further to the south is Les Sables D'Olonne - a town with a rich maritime history and host to the round-the-world Vendee Globe solo sailing event.
Agriculture, food processing and light manufacturing are also important. Fishing is popular at sea or in the Vendee’s rivers and lakes. The climate in this area is mild and is a moderate version of what is found in Central France: summers are warm, but not stiflingly hot, while winters are mild thanks mostly to the warm Atlantic winds that blow in from the west that makes for a great combination in every season.
The capital of the department is La Roche sur Yon- a town built by Napoleon in 1804 located in the heart of the Vendee in Western Loire. It was initially called Napoleon but after some time it became La Roche sur Yon (named after the river flowing into the eastern part of the town).

It is really very cheap considering its great location on the coast and near popular beach resorts of La Rochelle in Charente Maritime, Ile de Re and its own Les Sables d’Olonne.
