Information - Tarn Immobilien zum Mieten mit Leapfrog Properties

Tarn

This department is located in the Midi-Pyrenees region and its bordering departments are Aude, Aveyron, Haute-Garonne, Hérault and Tarn-et-Garonne. The landscape is very varied: with mountains and forest mainly in the east contrasting the valleys in the west. Many beautiful rivers and lakes are also found in Tarn from the Monts de Lacaune and the Montagne Noire. Also in the countryside lie vineyards which have been there since the 1st century BC and indeed Tarn is recognised as the traditional birthplace of French wine being the oldest wine region in France.

The capital is Albi and thanks to its airport provides easy international access to the eastern half of the Midi-Pyrenees. In the town itself are many fine buildings dating back several centuries with an exquisite cathedral from the 13th century. Its most famous son is the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who spent much of his short life riding the wave created by the Romantic Bohemians in Paris in the 19th century. He was to have an affinity with the Moulin Rouge during his time in Paris, where he produced such famous works as At the Moulin Rouge. The Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi houses some 500 pieces of the artist's work.
The sous prefecture of Tarn is Castres. It is located on the southern cusp of the Massif Central and has been the centre of the French cloth industry since the 14th century. The town hall, formerly a bishop’s palace, and today the Musée Goya has a large collection of Spanish art with Goya fairly well represented.

The town’s mostly balconied houses are reflected in the waters of the river Agout. Some formal gardens with an organised riot of topiary designed by Le Nôtre (who later landscaped Versailles) are a short walk away. It is medieval town and was one of the pilgrimage stops on the route taken by Santiago de Compostela. There are many beautiful buildings with red roof tiles and white-cream exteriors.
