Creuse
Located in central France in the Limousin region, it is surrounded by the departments of Corrèze, Haute-Vienne, Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, Cher, and Indre and was created in 1790 during the French revolution.
The climate is a mix between an oceanic and mountain climate because of its location and it has a surface area of about 5,565 km2 with around 127,300 inhabitants.
The capital of Creuse is Gueret, a quiet and unassuming town and is the smallest préfecture in France where there is The Musée de la Sénatorerie- an Ali Baba’s cave of exhibits with an impressive collection of Art Deco. During the summer a number of lively music festivals take place which fortunately don’t attract quite so many visitors as some other very touristy locations in France.
One of the biggest attractions in Creuse is the plateau Millevaches which is located between Creuse and Correze where cows and sheep graze the upland pasture and the name Millevaches is an ancient Celtic word, meaning a thousand springs. Millevaches is best appreciated on foot or bicycle during the summer but is best avoided in winter when temperatures can drop to 20 below.
Another famous city is Aubusson, a neat looking grey stone town standing on the river Creuse. This city owes its existence to the pure mountain water flowing by, which has been used to make tapestry and carpets since the 15th century.
