Niort (the capital), Bressuire, Melle, Parthenay, St Maixent, Thouars and Oiron are the principal towns in the Deux-Sevres. Niort is located on the south-west of the department, on the Sevre Niortaise river side, close to Vendee. It is a medieval town with a port which used to be important in medieval times but nowadays the river is a lot more peaceful.
The city has a good selection of provincial restaurants serving good regional specialities and is served by two international airports (La Rochelle and Poiters), which are a short distance away. Insurance companies employ more than half the population of Niort which as a result is very prosperous. Parthenay is a sous-prefecture of Deux-Sevres with a beautiful medieval centre through which to stroll. From the upper fortified town you can get good views across the surrounding countryside.
