Information on Haute-Marne and Property Available for Sale through Leapfrog Properties

Haute-Marne

Haute-Marne is a department in the northeast of France and is part of the current region of Champagne-Ardenne surrounded by the departments of Meuse, Vosges, Haute-Saône, Côte-d'Or, Aube, and Marne.

The climate is allows vine to grow: summers are long and hot with only a little precipitation while the winter is often cold and dry- most of the annual rainfall confining itself to the spring and autumn months.

Agriculturally the chief crops are wheat and oats which are more than sufficient for the needs of the inhabitants; potatoes and lucerne are next in importance. Natural pasture is abundant, especially in Bassigny, where horse and cattle-raising flourish.

The vineyards produce some fair wines, notably the white wine of Soyers and the leading industry is metallurgical; St Dizier is the chief centre of manufacture and distribution.

The main town in the department is Chaumont, famous for its posters past and present. Art-lovers are still attracted by this city where the International Poster Festival takes place. Langres is famous for its history and was once the capital of Burgundy under the Gauls. The city also houses the Musee d’Art et d’Histoire and Watersports are easy to access thanks to the four nearby lakes. The oldest spa town in eastern France is Bourbonne-les-Bains where the Parc des Thermes has the Gallo-Roman remains of the baths. Source: pays-langres.fr
