Puy-de-Dôme
Puy-de-Dôme is a department in the centre of France named after the famous dormant volcano, the Puy-de-Dôme. It is part of the current region of Auvergne and is surrounded by the departments of Loire, Haute-Loire, Cantal, Corrèze, and Creuse.
It is a department with stunning natural scenery of mountains, volcanoes, rivers and lakes and offers an abundance of activities for nature lovers and active outdoor types such as rambling, cycling, canoeing and horse riding to name but a few.
The volcano Puy de Dome is located in the Chaine des Puys, in the Monts Domes remarkable for their rocky corries, their valleys, their trap dykes of basalt, their lakes lying in the depths of ancient craters or confined in the valleys by streams of lava, and their wide plains of pasture-land. They are joined to the mountains of Cantal by the non-volcanic group of the Cezallier. In the east of the department, along the confines of Loire, are the Monts du Forez, continued in the north by the Bois Noirs. Between these mountains is the fertile plain of Limagne where the bulk of farming is done.
The climate of Puy-de-Dome is usually very severe due to its location in the centre of France; the mildest air is found in the northern valleys which are fairly low down. Agriculture is very important and the Limagne yields a variety of products from rye, wheat, oats and barley, potatoes but also fruits: apricots, cherries, pears, walnuts and apples. Mountains provide pasture for large flocks of cows and sheep and cheese-making is an important industry in the department.
Clermont-Ferrand is the capital. The name came from the fusion between the Clermont and the town Montferrand, its rival, in 1731. There is stunning architecture in the city, the most impressive being the catherale Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption. Locals like to stress that the black facades of many of the cathedrals and houses are due to the use of local dark volcanic rock and not dirt. Near Clermont-Ferrand is Mont Gergovie, the scene of the victory of Vercingetorix over Julius Caesar. Other places of interest are Billom, Chamalieres, Courpiere, Orcival, St Nectaire and St Saturnin, which possess churches in the Romanesque style that is classic of Auvergne.
