Information on Vosges and Property Available for Rent through Leapfrog Properties

Vosges

Vosges is located in the Lorraine region and is its most southerly department bordering the departments of Haute-Marne, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Haute-Saône and the Territoire de Belfort.
In 1794 the Vosges was the site of a sizeable battle between the forces of Revolutionary France and the Allied Coalition. After the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, 4% of the Vosges department in the extreme northeast of the department was annexed to the German Empire by the Treaty of Frankfurt. In 1919, with the French victory in the First World War, Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France by Germany at the Treaty of Versailles. The department contains the highest peaks in the Vosges mountain range where skiing is enjoyed during the winter. The Vosges Mountains rise up to more than 1400m above sea level in the south-east of the department and are mostly covered in dense pine forest.
Epinal is the capital of the department. It is a small and modern town that straddles the Moselle River and Canal de l'Est in-between acres of unspoilt forest and offers a wild, untamed, natural and peaceful environment located only few miles away from the mountains, forests and waterfalls. Historically, the most impressive monument in the town is the 11th century Basilica. In contrast showing the modernity of the town is the Musee de L'Image, where 30,000 'images' that have been collected along with woodcarvings and other art can be found giving the name of the 'City of Images' to the town.
