Charente-Maritime
The department is located in west central France and surrounded by the departments of Gironde, Dordogne, Charente, Deux-Sèvres, and Vendee. The department includes the islands of Ile de Re, Ile d'Aix, and Ile d'Oleron. The climate is mild and sunny with less than 900 mm of precipitation per year and average temperatures vary from 20°C in summer to 5°C in winter.
There are three main sectors within the economy: tourism, maritime industry and manufacturing. In Charente Maritime the popular destinations include: La Rochelle - famous for its port and its charming old town which despite the tourist influx each year has not lost its charm, Rochefort - built in the 1660s as a military base, and Ile de Re - a holiday island with long sandy beaches, whitewash houses and no high rise apartments.
Charente-Maritime is the headquarters of the major oyster producer Marennes-Oléron and Oysters cultivated here are shipped right across Europe. Rochefort is the site of shipbulding and a French naval base while La Rochelle is a seat of major French industry - Just outside the city is a factory for the French engineering giant Alstom, where the TGV, the cars for the Paris and other metros are manufactured.
