Seine-Maritime
The department is located in the Haute-Normandy region and borders the departments of Eure, Oise and Somme and also the English Channel.
In general Seine Maritime is fertile and well cultivated the fisheries are great resources for the inhabitants of the northern seaboard.
The prefecture of the department is Rouen, located midway between Paris and Le Havre. The regional capital of Normandy is easy to access (road, ferry, regional airport…) and the local countryside is one of the treasures in the region. Only the River Seine separates the city and the forests. Rouen is dynamic and offers plenty of activities: shopping, a calendar event such as festivals etc and is full of beautiful monuments, especially its famous cathedral painted by Claude Monet. Also of interest is the Musee des Beaux Arts in the pedestrian centre and the church St Ouen.
Le Havre (sous-prefecture) is also an important city in Seine Maritime: it is one of the major ferry ports in France but is not very pretty because of its destruction during the war; however, the Musee Malrauc (Musee des Beaux Arts) is worth visiting to have a look at a fine impressionist art collection representing Normandy.
Dieppe is the second sous-prefecture and used to be a cross-Channel port but now with the opening of the tunnel, instead of the old ferry terminal, bars and restaurants have been expanded. The hill top château-musée has panoramic views across the seafront which hosts an annual kite festival.
