Ardennes
An interesting department, Located in the north of Champagne-Ardenne region, north of France, Ardennes shares a border with Belgium.
The main city is Charleville Mézières (an ideal base from which to explore the Meuse valley). It is an important place in an area badly affected by economic recession, where the heavy industries on which they have relied upon have disappeared. Dairy farming has remained and is now the principle activity but to outsiders the town has become known as the world’s puppet capital, playing host to the World Puppet Festival in September.
Ardennes remains largely unspoilt and its thick forests and winding medieval roads cutting through the towns and countryside really give this area a lot of charm. Thanks to a varied geology including a patchwork of hilly ranges, the Ardennes offers a new landscape at every turn offering great areas to explore not least its fantastic fortified castles and museums. The local architecture also has been shaped by the geology of the Ardennes; in the south you’ll find the white stone villages dotted around, while the sandstone around Charleville Mézières colours the houses yellow and soaks up the sun better. Ardennes also has the rust coloured stone that gives some houses their red tint and in some areas you can find houses built from blue marble.
