Loiret
Loiret is located in the region of Centre (Loire Valley) and is surrounded by the departments of Seine-et-Marne, Yonne, Nièvre, Cher, Loir-et-Cher, and Eure-et-Loir.
Agriculturally, in the department there are a large number of sheep, cattle, horses and pigs but also poultry, especially geese, and bees are plentiful. Potatoes, beetroot, colza and forage plants are also cultivated and wine is grown in abundance on the hills of the Loire valley.
The industries are brick, tile making and the manufacture of faience, for which Gien is one of the most important centres in France. The production of hosiery, wool-spinning and various forms of wool manufacture are also common.
The capital is Orleans which is famous for its association with Joan of Arc, where she returned after her victory over the English. In Orleans the architecture is pleasant and there is a museum; the Musée des Beaux Arts with a collection of 17th and 18th portraits from the French school as well as more modern works by Renoir and Picasso among others. Orléans is a popular tourist destination, with its cathedral of St. Croix, where Joan of Arc is celebrated.
The city of Montargis is famous for its pralines and is popular for tourists who stop here while visiting the surrounding chateaux.
