Informazione - Nord e le proprietà disponibili per l'affitto in Leapfrog Properties

Nord

Nord, is the most northern of the departments of France. It is part of the current region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and is surrounded by the French departments of Pas-de-Calais and Aisne, as well as by Belgium and the North Sea. Nord comprises the French part of former Flanders and in 1237 as the county of Artois (now a part of the neighbouring Pas-de-Calais). This territory had been ruled by Spain since 1556 but was ceded to France in successive treaties (1659, 1668, and 1678) and was created during the French Revolution in 1790.
Nord is unusually long and narrow and its principal city is Lille, which with nearby Roubaix and Tourcoing constitutes the centre of a cluster of industrial and mining towns (now in decline) totalling slightly over a million inhabitants. In terms of agricultural and industrial importance Nord is at the top of the list. Agriculturally Nord produces beetroot, Cereals (especially wheat and oats), potatoes, flax, tobacco, chicory and hops may be mentioned. Other great industries are brewing, glass, brick, pottery and sugar manufacture, alcohol-distilling, dyeing, iron-founding and steel production, and other branches of the metallurgical industry.
The Nord is for the most part unspoilt and can truly claim to be ‘la France profonde’. However, in the centre of the department the fourth largest metropolis, Lille, is an impressive cosmopolitan mix of old and new.
Lille’s programme of restoring the old town has paid handsome dividends; facades, streets and shops have all been restored presenting a vibrant and interesting city. It is important to note that the city houses the second most important fine art museum after the Louvre: the Palais des Beaux Arts with works of Rubens, Raphael and Rodin.
Another important town in the department and the third busiest port in France is Dunkerque which was completely destroyed during WWII and was the last French town to be liberated in 1945. After the war, redevelopment was rapid and functional rather than tasteful and the town has suffered as a result.
