Jura

The department is located in the east of France, in the Franche-Comte region and is surrounded by the departments of Ain, Côte-d'Or, Doubs, Haute-Saône, Saône-et-Loire and also by Switzerland. The area is around 5,000 km2 and the population roughly 230,000 inhabitants.
The area of Jura is a great natural beauty from rolling wooded mountain tops to forests covered valleys with a network of rivers in Northern Jura at a lower altitude. In the south the landscape is at its wildest with the forests, the steep valleys and the mountains.

The climate varies quite considerably from the bitterly cold mountains during the winter to the more temperate locations in the lower valleys.

Jura is an agricultural department: wheat, oats, maize and barley are the chief cereals, the culture of potatoes and rape also of importance. Wine growing is both popular and successful in Jura especially the vin Jaune and vines are grown mainly in the cantons of Arbois (where you ca find a wine museum), Poligny, Salins and Voiteur. Woodlands occupy about a fifth of the area and natural pasture is abundant on the mountains where Forests, gorges, torrents and cascades are characteristic features of the scenery.

Capital of Comté cheese, Poligny is an ancient fortified town with some architectural gems including the collegiate church of St Hippolyte, L’Eglise de Mouthiers le Vieillard and the hotel particulier Fauquier-Bauffremont. The cheese festival, La Fête du Comté takes place here in the last week of June.
Dole is one of many charming medieval towns and villages that sprout up across the countryside with a very attractive historic quarter full of grey stoned houses and winding streets set amongst the 16th century collegiate church of Notre-Dame.
Lons-le-Saunier is its capital and a spa town since Roman times with 18th century architecture where the salt extracted from the water gave the town its name and there is an archaeology museum in the town hall.
