Moselle

Moselle is a department in the northeast of France forming part of the current region of Lorraine and is surrounded by the French departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle and Bas-Rhin, as well as Germany and Luxemburg to the north.
Moselle has a long history because of its location changing hands between the French and Germans on several occasions with a stream of the battles and hence has a strong Germanic influence which can be seen in its property and architecture. Moselle was annexed by Germany during 1870-1918 but now the situation has remained relatively stable since World War II. The population now exceeds 1 million, located mostly in the urban area around Metz and along the Moselle River. In Moselle, there are many interesting sites such as the mining galleries or the tunnels under the Maginot line, which conjure up memories of heroic times.
Metz is the capital of the modern Lorraine and it is enjoyable to visit museums such the Musee de la cour d’Or (which is the Musee d’Art et d’Histoire) or to walk around the twenty bridges that criss-cross the river and canal of Moselle and Seille. The St Etienne cathedral is also worth going to with stained glass windows ranging from the gothic to the modern era.
