Gard

Gard is located in the south of France, in the Languedoc Roussillon region. It is bordered by the departments of Ardèche, Aveyron, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hérault, Lozère, Vaucluse. The area is 5,853 km^2 and the population is around 607,300 inhabitants.
The climate in this part of France is mild and rarely cold even in the winter and has hot summers with little rainfall.
In the department, deep gorges, forested hills and dramatic riverscapes can be enjoyed. In the north, there are the Cevennes Mountains also bordering the Ardeche and hence Gard contains a part of the Cévennes National Park offering an abundance of outdoor activities such as canoeing, hiking, cycling etc.
Historically, Gard has one of the greatest surviving pieces of Roman heritage as it was settled by the Romans in classical times and really does offer a great mix of culture and history for the would be settler in this area.
Gard is celebrated for its fruitfull valleys, its gorges, its pastures, and the chestnut, mulberry and other fruit trees with which the mountains are often clothed to their summits. The Garrigues is a dry area which stretches from the foot of the Cevennes over the centre of the department, covering about half its area and lends itself to the cultivation of cereals, the vine and olives,.
The vine is extensively cultivated and yields excellent red and white wines while the department is also rich in minerals, the fisheries are productive and great quantities of salt are obtained along the coast.
Nimes, in the south of Gard is the capital of department and thanks to modern architects who have brought fashionable touches with a new art complex give the city a modern feel. Many people are attracted by the three storey Roman arena known as Les arenas, which can seat up to 20,000 spectators and was one of the first sites for bull fighting outside of Spain.
To the north west of Nimes lies Arles, once a centre for silk and then later iron and coal where you can admire an 18th century cathedral and town hall.
