Seine-et-Marne

The Seine et Marne department is located in the Ile-de-France region bordering the departments of Aisne, Aube, Loiret, Marne, Oise, Yonne, Essonne, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne and Val-d'Oise.
The climate here is rather more continental than that found in Paris with warmer summers and colder winters with just 16 inches of rain per year even within the department the south is considerably warmer and is where the white Chasselas grape is grown.
Melun is the capital of Seine et Marne and in the 10th century the Chateau Royal was built for the French kings and was used until the Renaissance period. The town itself has hosted famous people such as Abelard, Louis Pasteur, and Paul Cezanne.
Fontainebleau is a peaceful place, which can be compared to Versailles even though it is not on the same scale and is less crowded and very enjoyable. In the 16th century, the forest was transformed by a Royal palace which was always improved by the different monarchs living there. Napoleon III, the first Napoléon who spent a lot of time and money here called it La Maison des Siècles (The House of Centuries). The result is that parts of the palace are too elaborate and even rather gaudy, but the Galérie François I is a fine example of Italian art and the royal apartments are incredibly sumptuous.

Coulommiers is famous for its cheese (similar to Brie) and prospered in the middle ages because it is on the route to champagne where large commercial fairs were held. It has one of the finest secret gardens in the region- the Parc des Capucins, the former grounds of a 17th century château ruin. The Capuchin convent remains whereas the church was transformed into a museum of local history.

Meaux is the second sous prefecture of the department. It is considered having a gastronomic reputation thanks to the Brie cheese but also its mustard which has been a major industry since the time of Charlemagne who started the tradition of growing mustard in cathedral cities.
